So, Metro Schools’ HR department is NOT making a good impression on me so far. When I went by (drove 30 miles out of my way to go their Central Office one day after school with two kids, then fought traffic for 45 minutes to get home) to pick up my new hire packet, I was chided for not having my social security card and driver’s license photocopied already. (Um, how much does it cost to make two copies?)
Then, today I went to a picnic with some students and teachers from Goodlettsville Elementary, my new school, and one of the teachers said, “I hear you were almost our new ESL teacher.”
ALMOST?
My jaw dropped. Just at that moment the principal happened to walk up and said, “HR didn’t call you? I was going to, but they said they’d call you. They took a position away from us.”
WHAT?
Okay, okay, so it’s really not bad. They took 10 ESL kids from Goodlettsville Elem and moved them to Old Center Elem, and took a teacher position with them! Old Center is only 5 minutes down the road from Goodlettsville, so it’s still on the side of town I wanted. However, they’ve never had an ESL teacher or ESL kids there before, so it will be an adjustment for the teachers, but hopefully it will work out. As far as I know, I’ll be doing a pull-out model where the ESL kids are mainstreamed into regular classroom, and I pull them out for an hour or so per day for English instruction. Fine with me! I am happy to have a job!
That said, I got to meet my NEW new principal today, too, and he was like, “Well, I’m pretty sure you’ll be there, but we need to double check.”
Yeah, that’s how it is.
