So . . . to be honest I’m not exactly sure what today’s challenge is supposed to mean. I’ve already listed one book my favorite author . . . because it’s one of my favorite books. And I think I’ve picked another book by her for a later day’s topic. So I guess this post will be about my second favorite book by my favorite author. And she was a wonderful writer named Madeleine L’Engle.
A Ring of Endless Light by Madeleine L’Engle.
This is one of the Vicky Austin books, which is more of her chronos YA series (The Time series being a kairos one.). These books are less sci-fi and more realistic fiction, but still with an undercurrent of mystery. Vicky Austin is a teenager spending the summer with her dying grandfather, spending time with three different boys, and swimming with dolphins. Dear book, you had me at dolphins. Or maybe, you had me at ocean.
This book appeals to the poet-me, treating subjects like death and love and selfishness and selflessness and creation and pain and beauty. One of the boy friends she has (I don’t think any of them become her official boyfriend) is Zachary Gray, who shows up in other L’Engle books, too. Oh, how I hate Zachary Gray, the charming, manipulative, self-obsessed creep! Vicky deserves so much more. Adam Eddington is the boy that introduces Vicky to the dolphins. He is kind and smart, but treats Vicky like a little girl. Then there’s Leo, who sits and talks with Vicky about living and dying and God. Ultimately, each young man teaches Vicky a lesson about life. But it’s the dolphins, not the people, who save her when the inevitable happens.
I know this just sounds like another teenage romance. I promise, it’s not. It’s deep. It’s haunting. It’s beautiful.
