Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games. (Did you notice I how got straight to the point there?) Peeta is a good guy at his core. I absolutely love the scene in the book where he throws Katniss the bread. But that’s not the first time he notices her. He notices her when they start school at age five and he hears her sing the valley song. His dad tells him that he wanted to marry Katniss’ mother, but she married Katniss’ father because he could sing. Anyway, all these years, he’s watched Katniss, and then all of a sudden, he’s having to “play” The Hunger Games with her. Peeta is very real, honest, selfless, and humbly charming. Yet due to his hard upbringing in District 12, he’s also tough. He plays the Games with strategy and strength. I think that’s how he differs from Gale in the book. Both of them are tired of being controlled by the Capitol, but Peeta’s not angry like Gale is. He’s more thoughtful, calculating. That’s why the moment (SPOILER ALERT) that he and Katniss together try to take the nightlock is so great. It’s so in character for both of them. But I have absolutely no doubt that if it came down to it, Peeta would have given his life to let Katniss live. Who doesn’t want to be loved like that?
